US Senate bill threatens crypto, AI data centers with fees — Report

A potential new law in the US Senate is causing a stir in the tech industry, specifically in the realms of blockchain networks and artificial intelligence (AI). The draft legislation, coined the Clean Cloud Act, is led by Senate Democrats Sheldon Whitehouse and John Fetterman and aims to tackle the environmental impact of rising energy demands from data centers serving these technologies.

According to an April 11 Bloomberg report, the bill proposes that data centers and crypto mining facilities exceeding federal emissions targets will face fees. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would be responsible for setting emissions performance standards for data centers and crypto mining facilities with over 100 KW of installed IT nameplate power, with an 11% annual reduction target based on regional grid emissions intensities.
