The Public internet is a bottleneck for blockchain — DoubleZero CEO

As blockchain technology continues to evolve and gain traction in various industries, the need for high-speed and efficient communication infrastructure has become increasingly apparent. Austin Federa, co-founder and CEO of DoubleZero, a project focused on developing high-speed fiber optic communication rails for blockchains, emphasized the critical role that public internet infrastructure plays in the overall performance of high-throughput blockchain networks.

In a recent interview at Consensus 2025, Federa highlighted the limitations of the public internet, which was not originally designed to support the high-performance demands of modern blockchain systems. He explained that the decentralized nature of blockchain networks, with validators located around the world and constantly rotating leader schedules, requires massive amounts of resources for both data input and output. This reliance on public internet infrastructure has now become a bottleneck in blockchain performance, surpassing traditional constraints such as compute power or software development.

DoubleZero aims to address this issue by providing a dedicated communication infrastructure that can significantly enhance the speed and efficiency of blockchain networks. By leveraging high-speed fiber optic technology, DoubleZero's network is expected to accelerate blockchain transactions, reduce spreads in decentralized finance trades, lower transaction fees, and enable new use cases that were previously limited by communication constraints.

Founded by Federa in 2024 after leaving the Solana Foundation, DoubleZero has been making strides in its development efforts. The project conducted a successful validator token sale in April 2025, targeting accredited investors and active validators on prominent high-throughput blockchain networks. With plans to launch its public mainnet in the second half of 2025 following a $28 million capital raise, DoubleZero is poised to revolutionize blockchain communication infrastructure and support the growing demands of the industry.

As blockchain networks continue to expand and handle higher throughputs, the need for specialized communication infrastructure like DoubleZero's becomes increasingly apparent. By addressing the limitations of public internet infrastructure and providing a dedicated solution for blockchain networks, projects like DoubleZero are paving the way for a more efficient and scalable blockchain ecosystem.
