
Meta's AI chief, Yann LeCun, recently highlighted the limitations of current artificial intelligence models, stating that they lack key traits of human intelligence. At the AI Action Summit in Paris, LeCun emphasized that understanding the physical world, having persistent memory, the ability to reason, and plan complex actions are essential characteristics of intelligent behavior exhibited by humans and other smart animals.
LeCun pointed out that existing large language models (LLMs), which power popular AI chatbots, have not yet reached the level of intelligence that encompasses these fundamental traits. He suggested that incorporating these capabilities would necessitate a shift in the way AI models are trained.
To address these shortcomings, Meta is exploring innovative approaches such as the retrieval augmented generation (RAG) system, which enhances LLM outputs by leveraging external knowledge sources. Additionally, Meta introduced V-JEPA, a non-generative model designed to learn by predicting missing or masked portions of a video.
LeCun proposed the concept of "world-based models," which would be trained on real-life scenarios and possess a higher level of cognition compared to current pattern-based AI systems. These models would be capable of imagining actions and predicting various outcomes in a complex and unpredictable world.
Despite Meta's efforts to advance AI capabilities, the company is facing a talent drain within its AI research team. Several researchers who contributed to the creation of the original Llama model in 2023 have departed Meta to join Mistral, a Paris-based startup founded by former Meta researchers and key Llama architects. This talent exodus has raised concerns about Meta's ability to retain top AI talent and maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
Moreover, Meta's latest AI release, Llama 4, has received a lukewarm reception from developers. Many developers are turning to rival companies that offer reasoning models with faster innovation cycles, such as OpenAI's GPT-4o, Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Anthropic's Claude 4 Sonnet.
In light of these challenges, Meta recently announced a delay in the rollout of its flagship AI LLM, Llama 4 "Behemoth." The company is under pressure to address the talent drain and enhance the capabilities of its AI models to stay competitive in the increasingly crowded AI market.
As Meta continues to navigate these challenges and work towards developing more advanced AI models, the industry is closely watching how the company adapts to the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
