According to Belcher, the IPFS architecture is well-suited for space environments due to its ability to reduce delays, mitigate data corruption caused by radiation, and facilitate cryptographic verification to ensure data integrity. The Filecoin Foundation, a nonprofit entity overseeing the decentralized cloud storage protocol Filecoin (FIL), leverages the IPFS web protocol for data storage, while Lockheed Martin is renowned as one of the world's leading aerospace companies.

Belcher highlighted the benefits of decentralized storage in space scenarios, emphasizing the significance of IPFS in overcoming communication challenges such as multi-second delays from the Moon and multi-minute delays from Mars. With IPFS, users can locate data based on content ID and retrieve it from the nearest source, be it their device, a nearby satellite, or a lunar station.

Moreover, the distributed architecture of IPFS, which stores multiple copies of data across a global network, reduces dependence on centralized data centers, enhancing data reliability in environments susceptible to hardware degradation. This feature is particularly crucial for maintaining the integrity of sensitive materials like satellite images, according to Belcher.

The interest in decentralized archival storage is growing, especially among media companies exploring the potential of this technology. Belcher mentioned that the Foundation is also investigating potential military applications of decentralized storage, underscoring its potential for creating robust data archives and ensuring global accessibility when required.
